Bourne is both Cape Cod's oldest and youngest town - settled in the 1620s but not incorporated until 1884 - and today the Bourne Conservation Trust protects land across nearly every village in town.
Bourne straddles the Cape Cod Canal, a 17.4-mile channel connecting Cape Cod Bay and Buzzards Bay. The town includes Four Ponds Conservation Area, where remnants of a 19th-century industrial water system still stand.
The Bourne Conservation Trust, founded in May 1980, holds land across most of Bourne's villages - Cataumet, Pocasset, Monument Beach, Bourne Village, Gray Gables, and South Sagamore - including woodlands, wetlands, fields, and frontage on the Cape Cod Canal.
