Bourne Conservation Trust
Bourne is both Cape Cod's oldest and youngest town - settled in the 1620s but not incorporated until 1884 - and today the Bourne Conservation Trust protects land across nearly every village in town.
Landscape
Bourne straddles the Cape Cod Canal, a 17.4-mile channel connecting Cape Cod Bay and Buzzards Bay. The town includes Four Ponds Conservation Area, where remnants of a 19th-century industrial water system still stand.
Conservation
The Bourne Conservation Trust, founded in May 1980, holds land across most of Bourne's villages - Cataumet, Pocasset, Monument Beach, Bourne Village, Gray Gables, and South Sagamore - including woodlands, wetlands, fields, and frontage on the Cape Cod Canal.
History
Bourne is both the oldest and youngest town on Cape Cod - settled as part of Sandwich by the Pilgrims in the 1620s, but not incorporated as its own town until 1884. Construction of the Cape Cod Canal, completed in 1914, was the single most significant event in Bourne's history.
