Plympton Open Space Committee
Plympton, settled in 1662, is one of the South Shore's most rural towns, protecting places like Cato's Ridge - named for a Revolutionary-era resident - and Churchill Park, tied to one of the town's founding families.
Landscape
Plympton is a rural, largely undeveloped town centered on preserving its water resources and rural character, per its own Open Space and Recreation Plan. Cato's Ridge Conservation Area sits on a glacial ridge reaching 130 feet, with hardwood forest, wetlands, and a small pond.
Conservation
The Plympton Open Space Committee works to preserve key natural areas and support passive recreation and agriculture. Cato's Ridge (77 acres) was donated to the town by the T.L. Edwards company in the early 1990s.
History
Plympton was settled in 1662 and incorporated in 1707. Churchill Park is named for the Churchill family, among the town's earliest settlers in the early 1700s, whose descendants have lived in Plympton for over 300 years. Cato's Ridge is named for a servant reputed to have lived there during the Revolutionary period, who died in 1806.
