History
Rochester was incorporated in 1686, named for Rochester, England, and originally thrived on shipbuilding and whaling trade centered in Mattapoisett Harbor (Mattapoisett wasn't set off as its own town until 1857). Remnants of a colonial-era sawmill built by the Church family - descendants of King Philip's War figure Benjamin Church - still stand along the Mattapoisett River at Church's Field.
