Whitman Town Park

Whitman Town Park (also known historically as Whitman Park) was established in 1880 through a gift of land from Augustus Whitman, whose family gave the town its name, with paths, an open lawn, and a bandstand designed by the Olmsted Brothers landscape firm around 1900. Original Olmsted features included a wading pool and a concrete tennis court, later converted to a basketball court; the firm returned in 1931 to update the design and address drainage issues in the park's low-lying sections. A Civil War monument was added in 1908, and today the gazebo hosts free summer concerts open to the public -- bring a chair or spread out on the grass. The park was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
