3 trails Wankinco / Agawam River watershed town

Carver is home to most of Myles Standish State Forest, over 12,000 acres of pine barrens and kettle ponds where bog iron once fed Revolutionary War cannonballs and cranberry farming later took over.

Landscape

Carver shares Myles Standish State Forest with Plymouth - at over 12,000 acres, it's the largest publicly owned recreation area in southeastern Massachusetts, home to pine barrens, nearly 60 kettle ponds, and working cranberry bogs.

Conservation

Myles Standish State Forest is managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. Established in 1916 after the state purchased a 5,700-acre former game sanctuary, the forest has been reforested since the 1910s, including extensive Civilian Conservation Corps planting in the 1930s.

History

Carver's bogs and ponds once fueled bog-iron production that helped supply cannonballs during the American Revolution; by the early 1900s that industry gave way to cranberry farming, and at its peak roughly a fifth of all U.S. cranberries were harvested in Carver.
