Quincy's shoreline parks carry deep history - Broad Meadows Marsh was once Passanageset, home to the Massachusett people, and Merrymount Park was an 1885 gift from a grandson of President John Quincy Adams.
Landscape
Quincy's coastline includes Merrymount Park, Broad Meadows salt marsh, and Passanageset Park at Broad Meadows Marsh - a restored salt marsh along the Town River. Blue Hills Reservation, a 7,000-acre state park, also extends into Quincy.
Conservation
The nonprofit Quincy Parks Conservancy works to protect and restore the city's parks and open spaces, including the ongoing Passanageset Park restoration, a partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
History
Broad Meadows Marsh was once Passanageset, a seasonal home to the Massachusett people and seat of Chickataubut, their principal sachem, before European settlement. Merrymount Park was donated to the city in 1885 by Charles Francis Adams II, grandson of President John Quincy Adams, and its early design involved landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted.
