Great Brewster Woods & Dean’s Meadow

Great Brewster Trail is a hidden gem located right near Cohasset Center. The trail entrance is perhaps a bit concealed which is why I have overlooked the signs for years. The trail is a phenomenal resource and such a great addition to our South Shore trail network.

History

In September 1985 the Great Brewster Corporation granted to the Trustees approximately 18 acres of woodland. The Corporation was a real estate development venture undertaken jointly by Edgar Hill, Walter Railsback, Raymond Remick and George McLaughlin, all of Cohasset. The name 'Great Brewster' derives from the Boston Harbor Island by that name, where Edgar Hill had a gravel mining venture. Together with Dean's Meadow this property protects 25 acres of open space in the heart of Cohasset Village. [Source: Cohasset Conservation Trust ]

Points of Interest

• Great Brewster Woods is a typical New England and South Shore site including historic stone walls, large amounts of ledge outcroppings, and streams. The trail guide calls out several tree varieties including: white and red oaks, black tupelos, witchhazel, American beech, junipers, mockernut hickory, holly, white birch and hophornbeam as well as club mosses, blueberry, wintergreen, lichen (rock tripe), sweet pepperbush, and sassafras.
• At the furthest point of the trail, there is a very picturesque stream that abuts the marsh. There is a granite bench that seems perfect for taking in the scene and enjoying the moment.
