Rockland Town Forest

The 43-acre Rockland Town Forest -- also known as the George Anderson Town Forest -- features a well-maintained woodland trail network with numerous views of French's Stream, a headwater tributary to the Indian Head/North River system. Trails are lined with gravel and stone in places, with a series of wooden bridges and walkways carrying visitors across the stream and its surrounding wetlands. The forest exists largely thanks to George Anderson, longtime chairman of the Rockland Town Forest Committee, who has spent decades developing and maintaining the trails and adding personal touches along the way -- curious stone stacks, an occasional windchime, even a cleverly placed gnome. Originally established in 1984 with just under 20 acres, secured from a Boston developer who wanted the land kept undeveloped, the forest has since doubled in size through additional acquisitions, and there's even a designated Rock Art area for visitors to enjoy.
